Neuro Rehabilitation for Stroke recovery

People who have suffered from strokes often need to readjust to a different kind of life. Strokes, Ischemic or Hemorrhagic, or a Transient Ischemic Attack almost always results in long term conditions that most often necessitate dependency on family and friends. The victims need to adjust to a new life where some bodily functions are restricted.

A Stroke generally restricts the blood flow to the brain which in turn causes the nerves in the brain to start dying due to the lack of nutrients and oxygen. The extent of damage generally depends on the size of the brain injury and the circuits that are damaged and the complications that ensue depend on the area of damage. There are various disabilities that can be caused by a stroke if not attended to immediately.

Some of them are:

Paralysis- Loss of Motor control, problem swallowing (dysphagia), loss of balance (ataxia)

  • Sensory disturbances- Unable to feel touch, pain, temperature, loss of bladder control
  • Problems Understanding language (Aphasia)
  • Problems with thinking and memory
  • Emotional Disturbances

Neuro Rehabilitation

Neuro Rehabilitation ensures that a stroke victim not only learns to manage these conditions but to overcome them. With an amalgamation of treatments and therapies, Neuro Rehabilitation aims at restoring the neuroplasticity (rewiring of brain circuits). Curated Physical Therapy according to the patient’s condition, exercises to increase limbic and muscle movement, repetitive tasks to enhance the neuroplasticity, occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychological guidance are some of the therapies that are used.

Neurological rehabilitation brings together a variety of specialists together to work with the patients like Physicians, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Speech Language Pathologists, Vocational Therapists, and Rehabilitative Nurses. The involvement of these specialists with every patient purely depends on the patient’s condition and the therapeutic regime required to overcome that condition.
